The Confidence Children Carry Beyond the Classroom
The start of a new school year brings fresh routines, along with new friends and opportunities.
For families of children with disabilities, it can also bring uncertainty. Parents often spend this time confirming accommodations are in place and that their child has the support they need to succeed. While those conversations are important, it's just as important to help children believe in themselves.
Preparing for More Than a School Year
Schools play an important role in creating inclusive environments, but confidence begins long before the first day of school.
When children understand their strengths and what helps them succeed, they're more likely to express their thoughts and communicate their needs. That confidence is built through everyday experiences and encouragement from those around them.
Sometimes the greatest support we can offer is giving children the space to speak for themselves, explore new ideas, and solve problems independently. Parents and caregivers can lend a hand when asked, or when it becomes clear that a little extra support is needed .
Confidence Grows Through Practice
Finding your voice takes time and practice.
There will be uncomfortable moments when a child needs to ask for clarification, navigate a misunderstanding, or explain what they need. Those moments can be challenging, but they're also opportunities to build resilience and confidence.
Each experience reinforces an important message: My perspective matters.
Looking Ahead
As parents, it's natural to focus on the resources children need to succeed. It's just as important to help them build the confidence to use those resources and advocate for themselves as they become more independent.
By doing so, we help children trust their abilities and ultimately believe in themselves.
As another school year begins, I hope we continue creating environments where children with disabilities are encouraged to grow into confident self-advocates who carry that confidence well beyond the classroom.
