When Our Voices Are Heard

Lately, I've been thinking about my testimony before Congress for disability related programs and what that experience still means to me.

It reminds me why our lived experiences belong in the conversations and decisions that shape our lives.

The Perspective We Bring

We know from experience how the right support can create opportunities and how barriers can limit them.

Testifying before Congress on programs impacting people with disabilities gave me the opportunity to bring that perspective to a larger conversation about disability and inclusion. That experience illustrates the value of sharing our perspectives, and how our experiences can help others understand what works, where barriers remain, and where change is needed.

Self-Advocacy in Everyday Moments

Self-advocacy happens through small acts every day, whether it's sharing what kind of support works best for you with others in your community or asking for accommodation when you need it, even when speaking up doesn’t come easily.

I also know that advocating for yourself takes time and can sometimes feel difficult. The right support and opportunities can help us make choices and advocate in ways that work for us.

Over time, those small moments add up.

Creating Space for People to Lead

Families, professionals, organizations, and policymakers all have a role in creating environments where people with disabilities can participate fully.

That begins with listening.

Ask people about their experiences, learn what they need, and consider their perspectives. Create opportunities for them to participate, advocate for themselves, and be heard. Meaningful inclusion grows when people know their experiences and perspectives are valued.

Looking Ahead

When I think about my Congressional testimony today, I think about the importance of continuing to create opportunities for people with disabilities to be heard.

That means creating spaces where people are encouraged to share their perspectives and pursue what matters to them

By creating those opportunities, we help people shape what comes next and open the door for future generations to do the same.
